In 138 AD, the Emperor Aelius Hadrian had this triumphal bridge constructed across the Tiber as access to his mausoleum. In the Middle Ages, the Popes converted the latter into their fortress ("Angels' Castle"). The bridge was decorated with ten statues of angels based on designs by Bernini in the 17th century. It symbolises the transformation of Rome from the centre of the Roman Empire into the centre of Christianity. |
